Permalloy is a nickel-iron alloy.
One characteristic of permalloy is that its resistance changes when subjected to a magnetic field from a certain direction. AMR sensors use this characteristic to function as magnetic switches. The resistance value changes by up to 3% based on the magnetic field strength and the direction of the magnetic force lines.
