Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. will start mass production of non-isolated DC-DC converters*1 for electric scooters. The converter has been adopted by Tokyo-based (President and CEO: Toru Tokushige) for use in its new electric scooter.
As it looks to emerging markets as part of its medium-term management plan*2, Murata is committed to strengthening its marketing to better understand local needs, and to delivering new products and solutions to meet the features required by its customers.
While scooters are now widely used for daily transportation in emerging countries, they face problems such as high gasoline prices and environmental pollution caused by exhaust. As a result, electric scooters are expected to grow in popularity in coming years. In this context, Murata has developed a non-isolated DC-DC converter for the new A4000i electric scooter from Terra Motors, a venture company engaged in the manufacture and sale of electric scooters. This component will enable power from the scooter's battery to be used for auxiliary equipment such as headlights by stepping it down from 48V to 12V. In the future, Murata plans to expand its lineup beyond electric scooters to three- and four-wheeled compact electric vehicles.
Developed using the reliability-centered design techniques that Murata has cultivated for the automotive industry over the years, this DC-DC converter is sturdy enough to be used with confidence on the rugged roads in emerging countries. Murata was also able to engineer the converter to be highly efficient and compact thanks to its simple non-isolated design. It also features a 5V output that can handle a USB power supply and similar extras, all from a single small package.
Murata will be exhibiting this innovative chip ferrite beads at their booth in "CEATEC JAPAN 2013", which will be held from October 1.

Mass production is scheduled to begin in February 2014 at Wakura Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
Expansion of production to factories outside of Japan is also being considered.
