    Overview

    Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has introduced a power shelf (AC-DC converter for data center) compliant with OCP*1 for a data center in the US operated by Actapio, Inc. (formerly YJ America, Inc., hereafter, Actapio)*2, a US company and 100% subsidiary of Yahoo! Japan Corporation. This product was introduced in cooperation with ITOCHU Techno-Solutions America, Inc. (hereafter, CTC America), the US affiliate of Itochu Techno-Solutions Co., Ltd., an OCP certified solutions provider.

    Background

    In 2015, Yahoo! worked to reduce server operating expenses by taking advantage of the comparatively inexpensive electricity costs in Washington State, locating a data center there to be operated by US Actapio. The company implemented OCP in its big data platform at the data center, and this improved operational efficiency. The Murata power shelf was introduced at that time as an additional measure for improved efficiency.
    A power shelf is a collected set of power supplies used in a server rack for data center equipment, and the Murata power shelf allows mounting of lithium-ion batteries and ATS*3. The shelf also has the flexibility to be used in an EIA19" rack*4 or an OCP open rack. The remote management unit (RMU) of the power shelf was developed based on input from users and was jointly validated by Actapio and CTC America, and it provides an easy-to-use system for data center operators.
    By supplying a power shelf with high efficiency, excellent reliability and OCP compliance, Murata is contributing to reduced operating costs for data centers.

    Murata offers 2 types of power shelf, a Simple-Functional type and a Multi-Functional type, and the product introduced at this time is the Multi-Functional type.

    Explanation of terms

    *1. Abbreviation for Open Compute Project. A project started by Facebook in 2011 to produce open specifications for hardware such as servers at data centers used by Facebook services. Now includes over 150 companies worldwide, promoting development of servers, storage, switches and racks in the OCP specification.
    *2. Founded in 2014 to support promising startups in US and to expand US Internet services in Japan. Changed name from YJ America, Inc. to Actapio, Inc. in September 2017.
    *3. ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch): Automatic uninterruptible system switching device.
    *4. 19 inch server rack complaint with EIA (Electrical Industries Association) standard.
    *5. The connections within the power shelf are changed according to the input voltage specification rather than the specification for a single power supply unit.
    *6. The maximum output will change according to the input specification.
    *7. An RU (rack unit) is 44.5mm.
