Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has successfully upgraded the acoustic characteristics of the world's thinnest piezoelectric speaker (0.5mm*) .

By optimizing product structure and developing new materials, we succeeded in reducing distortion*1 and upgrading the sound pressure level,*2 while maintaining the small product size.
With the recent growing trend to use mobile devices continuously for longer and longer periods of time, built - in batteries for these devices are becoming larger and larger. As the size of their batteries increases, the amount of space left for auditory and mechanical parts decreases, creating the need for even smaller and thinner speakers.
In addition to thinner parts, the back panels of Murata's piezoelectric speakers that are needed for driving the device are smaller. As these speakers are well - suited for use in narrow spaces, they are often employed in compact mobile devices.
At the same time, market users are requesting even better acoustic characteristics in piezoelectric speakers. We achieved the following improvements by modifying our components and diaphragm maintenance mechanism.
- Reduced distortion in the important voice - band region of 2 to 4 kHz (distortion is cut in half for 2 kHz voice - bands).
- Improved sound pressure in low-frequency regions of 1 kHz and below.
||During speaker output, a high - frequency component is generated in addition to the original signal. Distortion is the value that represents the ratio of high - frequency component to original signal component. Lower distortion values translate to better acoustic characteristics.
