Ceramic Capacitors FAQQWhat is the cause of increase of capacitance when the ceramics become thinner?

A
Based on the formula C = ε x S/d, there are three methods of increasing the capacitance of a capacitor.

  1. Increasing the value of ε (Dielectric constant)
  2. Increasing the value of S (electrode area)
  3. Reducing the value of d (thickness of the dielectric)

Here, 1and 2 can be readily visualized intuitively. Regarding 3, you may be under the impression that a thick dielectric can hold a greater charge, but in fact this is not the case.
This is because the charge accumulates on the two electrodes but does not accumulate in the dielectric.
