ESD Protection Device Solutions for the Vicinity of an Antenna

Murata's ESD protection devices protect filters and ICs used in the vicinity of an antenna from destruction or damage. They also eliminate worries concerning harmonic noise generated in a TVS or Zener diode.

  • We are carrying out ESD countermeasures using TVS, but are quite unable to avoid noise or damage.
  • When carrying out ESD countermeasures using L+C, we are concerned that there is insufficient noise immunity. Also, if we attempt to increase the noise immunity, loss increases.

Issue:
Whenever we use TVS as an ESD countermeasure for components in the vicinity of the antenna, the reception sensitivity deteriorates due to harmonic noise during transmission.

Countermeasure and effectiveness:
We combined Murata’s LXES**A series ceramic base ESD protection device with a capacitor. As a result, no harmonic noise was generated, and moreover it was possible to implement ESD countermeasures while reducing insertion loss.

Issue:
When we use L+C, there is an unavoidable tendency for ESD noise immunity to be insufficient. Particularly, in the case of an antenna that uses a metal cabinet or a metal frame, the number of cases in which ESD noise immunity becomes an issue is increasing.
On the other hand, if the value of the shunt L used to increase the ESD noise immunity is reduced, the loss in the low band will increase.

Countermeasure and effectiveness:
We combined Murata's LXES**A series ceramic base ESD protection device with a capacitor. As a result, the ESD noise immunity was improved, and also it was possible to reduce the insertion loss in the low band.

Compared to circuit No. 1, circuits No. 2 and No. 3 have lower Vpeak and Vclamp values and also reduced insertion loss, thus clearly indicating the effectiveness of the countermeasure.
