Prevention of Global Warming

At Murata, we have established guidelines for global warming prevention, which are aimed at reducing the total CO2 emissions released through our business activities. In order to achieve our goals and targets, we formed the Committee on Global Warming Prevention, and, throughout the whole Murata Group, we have been continually carrying out company-wide and organization-based activities, including reduction measures from the stage of designing and developing products and production facilities to the stage of the manufacturing process.

Global Warming Prevention Target

While factoring in our business growth, we have set a target that enables a reduction of our total CO2 emissions.
  • By fiscal 2020, we intend to restrict our total CO2 emissions to 1.2 million tons.

Reduction of Total CO2 Emissions

Results of fiscal 2016

In fiscal 2016, we began initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions, with the amount necessary for the achievement of our target for the prevention of global warming as the target value. In fiscal 2016, these initiatives resulted in a reduction of approximately 36 thousand tons in our CO2 emissions, controlling our total emissions*, which are currently increasing due to the growth of our business, to 1.158 million tons.

In addition, we reduced our CO2 emissions per unit of production by 14.7% against the fiscal 2012 level, meeting the industry target.

Initiatives of the Committee on Global Warming Prevention

The Special Committee on Global Warming Prevention is made up of representatives of production plants, Business Departments, Development Departments, and Headquarters staff, and works to conserve energy and prevent global warming via a company-wide system.

Practical examples include the company-wide horizontal rollout of energy-saving measures that have been implemented up to this point, the use of heat pumps in our production facilities, and achieving major energy savings through improvement of productivity at manufacturing sites.

In addition, from fiscal 2017, we will revise our criteria for investment decisions in relation to energy conservation, working to advance our energy-saving measures to another level.

Introduction of Renewable Energy

In addition to energy-saving measures, Murata is also introducing photovoltaic power generation facilities as a means of producing renewable energy in order to further reduce our burden on the environment. In 2016, our photovoltaic power generation facilities generated a total of 5.6 million kWh of electricity, which contributed approximately 3,500 tons to our CO2 reduction efforts. We will continue to consider introducing renewable forms of energy with the goal of contributing to environmental load reduction.

Development of Energy-Saving Electronic Component Manufacturing Equipment

At Murata, we are developing electronic component manufacturing equipment that has a high rate of energy efficiency. Our indicator for the energy savings realized by this manufacturing equipment is energy consumption per unit of production (per unit of net production). We are developing the new equipment with the goal of a 50% or higher reduction in energy consumption against benchmark machinery (conventional manufacturing equipment).

We have also been proceeding with energy-saving improvements to the existing manufacturing equipment in operation at our plants, focusing on measures that will realize the greatest reductions in CO2 emissions. In fiscal 2016, we focused on a horizontal rollout of approximately 70 energy-saving measures for manufacturing equipment that we have formulated to date.

Our main energy-saving initiatives included: 1) The installation of heat exchangers to enable us to use the waste heat from drying equipment; 2) The operation of heat treatment equipment in eco mode; 3) The use of vacuum plants for ejectors; and 4) Ensuring that air blowers are turned off when equipment is standing by.
In addition, every year we conduct energy-saving training workshops for production equipment design engineers in their second year of employment, providing them with know-how in relation to the design of production equipment in order to realize energy savings.

As a new initiative in fiscal 2017, we will standardize energy-saving improvement measures that have proven successful, and incorporate them as part of the standard performance of production facilities. By this means, we will accelerate the introduction of energy-saving production equipment and promote the further horizontal rollout of energy-saving measures.

Contributing to the mitigation of global warming through energy-saving activities that demonstrate our strength as an organization

Murata Electronics (Thailand) , Ltd. ("Thailand Murata" below) ,located in Chiang Mai in Thailand's north, is Murata's second manufacturing base in the ASEAN region. Thailand is displaying rapid economic growth, and as a result, the nation’s energy consumption is increasing annually. The government’s energy policy has increased energy efficiency by almost 40% in one decade, and Thailand Murata is also actively working to conserve energy. An energy-saving framework, comprising such initiatives as the introduction of high-efficiency equipment such as LED lighting and operating improvements to increase the efficiency of the company's air conditioning system, has been implemented throughout the entire company organization, thereby reducing annual CO2 emissions by 880 tons. This represents 2.5% of Thailand Murata's total CO2 emissions. In the future, Thailand Murata will continue to fulfill its social responsibilities as a company doing business in Thailand, while working to provide a positive inspiration to the entire Murata Group with bases across the globe.

At Murata, we are introducing a global warming prevention plan toward reducing the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted from our business activities. Centered on the Global Warming Prevention Special Committee, these measures are being implemented throughout the Murata Group toward achieving the corresponding goals.
