Commercialization of Quartz Crystal Unit “Hybrid Crystal Resonator” Jointly Developed with Tokyo Denpa Co., Ltd.

Overview

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has commercialized and commenced mass production of “Hybrid Crystal Resonator,” quartz crystal unit, jointly developed with Tokyo Denpa Co., Ltd. (hereinafter “Tokyo Denpa”) .

Background

In 1977, Murata developed “CERALOCK®,” now widely used in various equipment for the purpose of resonating CPU clock signals*1.

Resonator devices*2 include ceramic resonators and quartz crystal units. Ceramic resonators are small and inexpensive, while quartz crystal units are expensive and high-precision. In most cases, consumer products tend to incorporate ceramic resonators.

However, as SATA*3 and USB accelerated the transfer speed for the PC interface, resonators used for HDDs began to require higher precision.

We have combined Tokyo Denpa’s high quality quartz crystal element technology and our excellent production technology to jointly develop quartz crystal units “Hybrid Crystal Resonators” as a timing device responding to the market demands.

In addition to our ceramic resonator’s stronghold in automotive and consumer applications, we can now aim at expanding our share in the HDD market where relatively high precision is required.

Collaboration

  • Tokyo Denpa provides quartz crystal elements, and Murata handles production and sales of quartz crystal units, “Hybrid Crystal Resonator”.

Features

  • More inexpensive compared with quartz crystal units
Based on Murata’s excellent production technology, achieving small size and high performance.
  • Higher-precision compared with ceramic resonators
High precision was achieved due to high grade quartz crystal elements provided by Tokyo Denpa. While the initial frequency precision for ceramic resonators ranges between a few hundred to a few thousand ppm, that of a Hybrid Crystal Resonator is approximately 100 ppm.
  • Complies to RoHS directive, being lead-free (phase 3)
  • Accommodates lead-free solder mounting

Terminology

*1 Clock signal Signal source that regulates operations of various LSIs
*2 Resonator device One of the timing devices. Ceramic resonators utilize ceramic piezoelectric properties, while quartz crystal units utilize quartz piezoelectric properties.
*3 SATA One of the extended specifications for IDE (ATA) standards used in the connection between computers and storage devices such as HDDs
