Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has both increased capacitance and reduced cost for X2 capacitors*2 (GB series) certified by the safety standard*1 for power supply primary circuits. This is the first product to achieve 56nF*3 capacitance as a monolithic capacitor aimed at power supply primary circuit application. The cost was also reduced by 15% over the previous model by replacing precious metal used for electrodes with base metal. This product can reduce the unit volume to 1/10 when replacing the typical choice of film capacitors for power supply primary circuits. The unit volume reduction makes the product ideal for small and low profile equipment such as adaptors for note-size PCs.
Safety standard is required for capacitors used in power supply primary circuits due to the risk of being exposed to high-voltage surge. Film capacitors typically used for this application were generally large and were not heat-resistant. The recent trend for smaller electronic equipment created demands for smaller capacitors for power supply primary circuits. Murata met these demands by developing the GB series certified by the safety standard for monolithic ceramic-type capacitors which can be made smaller than film capacitors and have been mass produced since 2003. Replacing precious metals like silver used for electrodes with base metals like nickel reduced previously high production costs. Simultaneously, the range of capacitance was increased from 10 － 33nF to 10 － 56nF to meet the need for high capacitance in X2 capacitor applications.
