Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.
President/ Statutory Representative Director: Tsuneo Murata
Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed an RFID (*1) reader/writer module to be used with today’s UHF (*2) band of RFID tags. With its small size, it solves many of today’s problems of integrating a cost effective solution into new products while contributing to the market expansion of RFID. Using our integration expertise and measuring only 23 x 13 x2.8mm, the RFID module can easily be adapted into the next generation of mobile devices.
We have also commercialized an easy-to-attach UHF RFID tag, “MAGICSTRAP® (*3)”, that can be used with printed circuit boards, hard tags and label applications.
Today’s RFID readers have a limited range since many are using High Frequency (HF*4) technology. Converting to UHF band RFID allows read distances of up 3 meters, making it possible to read multiple tags simultaneously without having to move the reader. Traditionally, one of the biggest obstacles for adoption of UHF band RFID has been the large size and high cost. Murata has met this challenge by developing a small and cost effective UHF reader/writer RFID module that can be built into portable equipment.
*1 RFID: An acronym for Radio Frequency Identification. Information is transmitted from ID tags via short-range wireless communication using electro-magnetic fields and radio waves.
*2 UHF band: Frequency bandwidth in 860 to 960MHz range. Their communication range is the longest among the ranges accommodated by passive tags.
*3 MAGICSTRAP®: RFID tag developed by Murata. Please refer to the URL below for its detailed information.

*4 HF band: 13.56MHz. Bandwidth used by common non-contact IC cards. They are currently the most commonly used IC tags.
We have developed a 23x13x2.8mm size product. Its volume is 80% smaller than current solutions on the market with the equivalent performance. Can be easily adapted into mobile phones.
The overall cost of the UHF band RFID reader/writer was greatly reduced through integration of key circuit blocks. Reading Multiple tags simultaneously.
A UHF band RFID reader can read multiple tags simultaneously without moving, contributing to faster reading actions in inventory management.
UHF band RFID reader/writer is suitable for the following applications.
Allows easy inventory checks for a wide range of products.
Quickly identifies and authenticates products with a corresponding UHF tag.
Can be easily adapted into POS equipment.
Frequency Range: 860 – 960MHz
Output level: +17dBm
Evaluation samples will be available on a limited basis starting October 2009.
Production is scheduled for April 2010 – 100kpcs/month planned.
10000 Yen/per unit
