Development of Ultra-small Chip Coil
-01005 EIA Size Film Type-

Chip Coil

Text

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed an ultra-small film type chip coil at 0.4x0.2x0.2mm (01005 EIA size), effective for high frequency circuits and for use in compact mobile equipment including cellular phones.

By revamping Murata's own latest micro-fabrication technology and optimizing coil formation and internal structure, the 01005 EIA size was developed from the conventional ultra-small 0201 EIA size thus making it the smallest in the industry.

The mounting area of this new chip coil has been reduced by approximately 40% of the 0201 EIA size thereby contributing to future downsizing of equipment and reduction in profile.

Our latest processing technology also realizes large Q values at high frequencies, and a stable inductance in spite of its size.

The inductance range is from 0.4 to 10nH with inductance tolerance of ±0.3nH/±5%. Murata will strive to add to the current lineup with new models of tighter tolerance.

No substance banned by the RoHS (*1) directive is used in this product range.

Mass-production is scheduled to start in April 2006, at 1 million units per month.

This model will be exhibited in the Murata booth at "TECHNO-FRONTIER 2006" to be held at Makuhari Messe, Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture starting on April 19.

Background

With the advance and trend towards more smaller, multi-functional mobile communication equipment including cellular phones, the total number of components used is on the increase. Furthermore, as this type of equipment becomes increasingly smaller in size and profile then the downsizing of chip coils will be necessary.

Additionally, high frequency circuits in small mobile communication equipment require a high Q in order to suppress signal attenuation.

Terminology

*1 RoHS Directive:
A directive to limit the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE in electric and electronic equipment scheduled to be enacted by European Union in July 2006.

Features

  • Ultra small, low profile size (0.4x0.2x0.2mm)
  • Provides high Q and stable inductance in the high frequency range, equivalent to 0201 EIA size model.
  • Inductance value: 0.4 to 10nH (new models are scheduled to be introduced in the lineup)
  • Inductance tolerance: ±0.3nH/±5%

Applications

  • High frequency module for cellular phones (PA/ANT/VCO/SAW, etc.)
  • Cellular phones (GSM/CDMA/PDC, etc.)
  • Digital TV tuners
  • W-LAN
  • "Bluetooth"
  • High frequency circuits in general
