Waste Management

Murata’s waste management processes are based on "Compliance," "Control of the production of waste," and "Zero emissions" as fundamental principles. The domestic Murata Group achieved its goal of zero emissions nationwide in fiscal 2003, and has maintained that status.

Based on our 6th Environmental Action Plan, which started in fiscal 2016, we are presently working to reduce our volume of waste products.

"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" Promotion

We did not achieve the target for volume of waste output for fiscal 2016 set out in our 6th Environmental Action Plan

※Fiscal 2016 target: 1% reduction against average volume of waste per unit of production for the period of the 5th Environmental Action Plan (fiscal 2011-2015)

We proceeded with measures including the use of waste as a resource, but despite this we missed our target by 6.4%.
The cause of this was a rapid increase in our volume of production of components generating a high level of waste per unit of production, as a result of the expansion of our business. We are proceeding toward rectification of this situation, and are currently planning measures to reduce this waste through capital investment.

Securing multiple waste processing routes for times of emergency

Murata contracts with a waste disposal firm to handle industrial waste generated through production activities, and also carries out recycling. If an emergency situation were to arise, such as an earthquake or flood in which processing facilities are damaged, it is possible that Murata would be unable to get rid of its waste. In such a case, if the storage area became full, Murata's production would have to be halted.

To avoid this potential situation, Murata is securing other additional processing routes at all of its factories so that production activities will not be affected in an emergency. Waste processing not only takes care of unusable resources, but it plays an important role in supporting manufacturing. We are working with waste disposal firms to make sure that function is provided.

Murata is working to reduce waste emissions. We also aim to strengthen our industrial waste management system to ensure the regular, responsible processing of that waste.
