The recent rapid economic growth of China is resulting in a chronic shortage of electrical power, and the problem of power shortages during the summer months is particularly acute. Also, national policies to combat a wide range of environmental issues, including controlling CO2 emissions, are accelerating the need for corporations to save energy and reduce the burden on the environment.

Amid this business climate, Shenzhen Murata Technology Co., Ltd., which is planning on expanding production, has installed a mega solar system in order to actively recognize its social responsibility as a company doing business in China, and to contribute to the widespread use of renewable energy and provide solutions for local power shortages.

At Murata Manufacturing, we had been examining the use of renewable energy for some time as part of our initiatives to prevent global warming. While involved in this process, the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, leading to the shutdown of nuclear power operations and a nationwide call to conserve electricity, all of which made the use of renewable energy even more important. The government then inaugurated various deregulations and energy-saving promotion measures, making the climate right for us to install such a system. Owing to the Kansai region receiving the highest demand for energy-saving, we decided to install a mega solar system in our Yasu Division in Shiga Prefecture.

This system is capable of generating sufficient annual electrical power to accommodate 200 or more normal households. We are also planning on putting the system to further good use by providing environmental study programs, etc. for elementary and junior high schools in cooperation with local authorities.

Address: 2288 Oshinohara, Yasu City, Shiga
Total Output: Approximately 1MW
Number of Modules in Use: Approximately 3,900
Contractor: Sharp Corporation
Annual Electricity Generation Capacity (Estimated) : 914MWh/Year
