We Plan to Realize This Technology by Overcoming the Remaining Challenges

Photo-induced metallic structures are still in developing stage. One of the purposes of this study is to realize all optical devices. Similarly to the sensing technologies in the visible frequency region, we can establish the same technology with THz waves. Light is the most familiar part of our lives, yet its potential is largely unexploited. Research using electromagnetic waves has advanced greatly since the turn of the century. The photo-induced metallic structures using THz waves are about to be implemented in realization of the optical devices with high package density, micro-fabrication and computer architecture. THz technology has the potential to actualize high-capacity, high-speed telecommunication as well.
Dr. Okada recalls, “As I researched optical sensing technology, I encountered THz waves and photo-induced technique. Through trial and error, I achieved breakthroughs such as the use of a prism, to finally arrive at sensing technology based on photo-inducedmetallic structures.” He added, “We have just set foot into this area of research and still face a mountain of challenges.” For example, THz radiation is absorbed by vapor; therefore, experiments using the THz waves should be conducted in the drying atmosphere. We also need more intense THz electromagnetic waves with well-formed waveforms, as well as equipment to allow real-time and high sensitivity detection. Dr. Okada exclaimed, “We would like to collaborate with industry and establish THz waves as useful technology.” Murata Manufacturing is one of the companies working on this amazing technology. We will carry on with in-depth discussion on this technology with Dr. Okada.

We can create temporal structures with free electrons like metal by exciting a semiconductor surface using a femtosecond-pulse laser. THz waves may be controlled by this structure.
