Murata today announced the launch of the PE25204, the world's first 48 Volt divide-by-4 charge pump capacitor divider with integrated switching field-effect transistors (FETs). Capable of delivering up to 72 watts of power with peak efficiency of 97%, the interleaved switching capacitor architecture is based on Murata's unique lossless charge pump technology, providing extremely low input and output ripple with excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance. The solution is presented in a compact footprint with 1.2 mm height, making it ideal for low-profile applications and placement on the underside of system boards. PE25204 devices can be connected in parallel to provide high power, high efficiency solutions suitable for a variety of 48V to 12V step-down conversion applications such as datacenters, networking routers, base stations and optical equipment.

“5G and IoT data-driven applications are pushing the limits for datacenter and networking power requirements. Next-generation systems are already migrating from 12V bus systems due to interconnect and printed circuit board copper losses,” said Stephen Allen, vice president of power at pSemi Corporation, Murata's subsidiary which was in charge of the development of this product. “Transitioning to a 48V architecture can improve system efficiency, streamline power density challenges, and solve busbar and connector issues. The PE25204 is akin to a virtually lossless DC transformer, but significantly smaller. As part of our expanding FlexiCP™ portfolio, the discrete, versatile 48V converter delivers industry-leading performance with extremely low noise and EMI in an ultra-compact solution footprint.”

Companies have traditionally relied upon brick converters to stepdown from 48V to the intermediate bus, usually 12V. The PE25204 breaks the mold by enabling system architects to design high power, 48V converters in a smaller footprint with enhanced efficiency and low noise performance. System designers have the flexibility to choose between creating a single high-power bulk 48V bus system with PE25204 devices connected in parallel or distributing individual PE25204 devices close to the point-of-load, thereby reducing system PCB copper losses.

Product Features

The PE25204 can be configured in a divide-by-3 as well as divide-by-4 conversion ratio, which extends its usage to 24V to 36V input applications typically used in consumer battery charging and industrial supplies. The charge pump-based DC-DC converter supports an output voltage range of 5V to 15V with load currents of 6A and up to 72W delivered to the external load. The PE25204 is designed to operate in a fixed divide-by-4 mode over an input voltage range of 18V to 60V. When set to the divide-by-3 configuration, the converter supports an input voltage range of 18V to 45V. Featuring an extended temperature range of −40 to +125°C, the PE25204 is fully protected with input undervoltage, overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown fault detection.

Packaging, Pricing and Availability

The PE25204 is offered on bare-die 3.6 × 5.8 mm wafer-level chip scale packaging (WL-CSP). The PE25204 costs $3 for volumes of 1,000 pieces. Samples are available now.
