Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) Wireless Module
Murata has developed several small form factor LPWAN modules that support Sigfox communication. Type 1QH is a bi-directional, uplink/ downlink, SMD-type module that allows for free design (module/ antenna arrangement) on customer's devices. Type 1NQ is an uplink, connector-type compact module with built-in antenna. It has Japan Radio Law certification and is "Sigfox Verified" certified, enabling easy installation on customer's devices. Type ABZ ( Sigfox ) uses a STMicro STM32-based wireless microcontroller and SX1276 Semtech RFIC, operates in 860 to 930MHz frequency band. It provides a nominal output power of +14 dBm that can be boosted to +20 dBm for long range or poor signal location applications.

Sigfox's Coverage

Sigfox provides an inexpensive, reliable, low power solution to connect sensors and devices. The Sigfox protocol focuses  on:

From hardware used in devices to network, Sigfox optimizes every step to be as cost effective as possible   Extremely low energy consumption for years of battery life
  No configuration, connection request or signalling. Up and running straight out of the box
  No large assets or media, only small notifications
Uplink payload: 0 to 12 bytes
Downlink payload: 0 to 8 bytes
Up to 140 messages per day per device
  Due to its low cost and ease of configuration, Sigfox can be used as a secondary solution to any other type of network (eg: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS, etc.)

Sigfox is a public network. Devices rely on the infrastructure deployed by the local Sigfox operator to communicate.


In addition to its connectivity service, Sigfox offers a location service for all devices equipped with a Sigfox-Verified module, without GPS. There's no need to retrofit to upgrade specific hardware, or to update software. The so-called Sigfox Atlas service is suitable for use cases where metric precision isn't needed. For example, to track moving items through complex supply chains.

Sigfox Technology

Sigfox has designed its technology and network to meet the requirements of mass IoT applications - long device battery life-cycle, low device cost, low connectivity fee, high network capacity, and long range. Sigfox offers a software based communications solution, where all the network and computing complexity are managed in the Cloud, rather than on the devices. Thus, drastically reduces energy consumption and costs of connected devices. The high quality of service of the Sigfox network relies on spatial diversity coupled with the time and frequency diversity of the radio frame repetitions.

Radio Signal Modulation (Ultra Narrow Band)
Using the Ultra Narrow Band modulation, Sigfox operates in the 200 kHz of the publicly available band to exchange radio messages over the air. Each message is 100 Hz wide and transferred at 100 or 600 bits per second a data rate, depending on the region. Long distances can be achieved while being very robust against the noise.

Lightweight Protocol for Small Messages
SIGFOX has tailored a lightweight protocol to handle small messages. Less data to send means less energy consumption, therefore, a longer battery life.

Small Payload
An uplink message has up to 12-bytes payload and takes an average 2s over the air to reach the base stations which monitors the spectrum looking for UNB signals to de-modulate. For a 12-byte data payload, a Sigfox frame will use 26 bytes in total. The payload allowance in downlink messages is 8 bytes.

Sigfox Star Network Architecture
A device is not attached to a specific base station unlike cellular protocols. The broadcasted message is received by any base station in the range, which is 3 in average.

Uplink Connectivity
The radio messages emitted by the connected devices are harvested by the Sigfox base stations, then transmitted to the Sigfox cloud and pushed to the end user's IT platform.
