Downsizing of equipment by replacing capacitor

Frequent Issues

To replace the current capacitor with a ceramic capacitor; the lead spacing (pitch) does not conform to a film capacitor

In the electronic circuits of cars and FA equipment (industrial equipment), the trend to replace film capacitors with ceramic capacitors has been accelerating in order to meet the requirements for high temperature, downsizing, and extension of lifespan. On the other hand, since there is a difference in the size of the elements between a film capacitor and ceramic capacitor, the pitch of the lead wires attached to the elements differs. This difference in the lead spacing (pitch) has been a concern when replacing a capacitor. Company E, which manufactures drive inverters for industrial motors, was also having difficulty in replacing a film capacitor with a ceramic capacitor.

Excessive costs to change the board!
Is manual processing of the lead wires the only method to replace a capacitor without changing the board?

The lead spacing differs between a film capacitor and a ceramic capacitor. In order to replace a film capacitor with a ceramic capacitor with a narrower lead spacing, Company E initially considered changing the board. However, based on calculations, it became clear that the board could not be changed easily, due the excessive initial costs.
Next, Company E considered the idea of manually expanding the lead spacing of a ceramic capacitor to same lead spacing as a film capacitor before mounting on the existing board. However, it would take time and effort to manually expand the lead spacing, and there was a risk of causing damage to the leaded products.

Company E, which was having difficulty with replacing a film capacitor with a ceramic capacitor, approached Murata; they had heard that Murata provides a variety of leaded products and support on their use. Discussions on how to replace a film capacitor with a ceramic capacitor at less cost without changing the board were held, and Company E found a method that satisfied their requirements.
