Murata's Ultra-compact Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors Awarded the Nikkei Awards for Excellence in the 2012 Nikkei Superior Products and Services Awards

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd.'s ultra-compact monolithic ceramic capacitors 0402 size (0.4 x 0.2 mm) and 0201 size (0.25 x 0.125 mm) were awarded the Nikkei Awards for Excellence at the award ceremony held today for the 2012 Nikkei Superior Products and Services Awards. The award ceremony was attended by our president and statutory representative director, Tsuneo Murata, who was awarded the shield from Tsuneo Kita, President and CEO of Nikkei Inc.

The Nikkei Superior Products and Services Awards are held once every year in commendation of superior new products and services, and this year represented the 31st time they have been held. 42 new products and services have been selected, after exacting evaluations by a board of judges, from approximately 20,000 items that have appeared in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun, the Nikkei MJ and the Nikkei Veritas over the course of one year from January through December 2012.

The world-leading technological skills that enable us to produce the world's smallest capacitors and the results of our ultra-compact capacitors being used in a large number of terminals throughout the world was highly acclaimed, and this resulted in us being presented with this year's award.

About Murata's monolithic ceramic capacitors

Monolithic ceramic capacitors are mounted on a wide range of electronic equipment, and it is said that between 400 and 500 exist in the latest smartphones. The number of electronic parts mounted onto compact mobile equipment is increasing in alignment with burgeoning levels of functionality, and this is leading to an increased need for ultra-compact parts to support high-density circuit boards. In order to cater to this need, Murata Manufacturing marketed the world's first 0402 size capacitor in 2004. These started off by being widely used in modules for compact mobile equipment, and have now spread to being used in smartphones. We were also successful in being the first in the world to develop an even smaller capacitor 0201 size in September 2012.

These success stories began with our foundation in 1944 and have continued ever since with our long-term involvement in the research and development of ceramic capacitors, and they represent a compilation of the in-house elemental technology that we have cultivated for raw materials, processes and production technology, etc. We will continue in our quest to develop ultra-compact and large-capacity products as a top vendor of ceramic capacitors into the future, and will continue to lead the field of electronics in not only quality and systems of supply, but in all aspects of related services.
