Polymer Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Murata's polymer capacitor has the feature of low ESR, low impedance, and large scale. Furthermore, there is no DC bias characteristic of capacitance, and since temperature characteristics are also stable, it excels in the Ripple absorption, smoothness, and the transient response performance.

Therefore, it is suitable for smoothing of input-output current of various power supply circuits, and the backup use over the load change of the CPU circumference. This contributes to reduction of the number of parts, or reduction of substrate area.

The ECAS Series

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors can be broadly divided into three types, based on the cathode material and the structure. Murata’s aluminum capacitors are all-solid multilayer polymer aluminum capacitors (the ECAS series)(Fig. 1).
Other varieties of aluminum capacitors include can-type wrapped aluminum capacitors that use either an electrolyte or a polymer as the cathode. What sets ECAS series capacitors apart are the high conductivity of the conductive polymer used as the cathode and the multilayer (laminated) structure of the aluminum elements. These make possible the lowest ESR obtainable among electrolytic capacitors.
ECAS series capacitors also achieve large capacitances, and the capacitance remains stable when DC voltage is applied due to the lack of DC bias. Thus, the major features of the ECAS series are low ESR, high capacitance, and stable capacitance.

In the following video, we explain in detail application examples for the 470µF maximum capacitance ECAS Series and its high capacitance, low ESR, and low impedance characteristics.

Customer benefits expected from the ECAS series features

(1) Voltage line stabilization

  1. Customer troubles:Unstable operation due to voltage noise
  2. ECAS feature:Low ESR. Customer benefit:Voltage line stabilization. Approximately 2.5 times the ripple absorption performance with the same capacitance
  • [Test condition] Iout=10A, fSW=300kHz. This data is reference data.

(2) Reduced burden on circuit designers

  1. Customer troubles:Troublesome capacitance calculations considering usage conditions. Design with consideration for the effective capacitance is necessary because it changes with the usage conditions (voltage and environmental temperature)
  2. ECAS feature:No characteristic changes due to DC bias and flat temperature characteristics. Customer benefit:Reduced burden on circuit designers. Design using standard values is possible because the effective capacitance does not change
  • [Test condition] Usage voltage=3.3V or 5V, Operating Temperature=10 to 60degC. This data is reference data.

(3) Reduced mounting area and number of parts

  1. Customer troubles:Mounting area that hinders product size
  2. ECAS feature:High capacitor. Customer benefit:Reduced mounting area/Reduced number of parts. The effective area necessary to obtain the same effective capacitance is less than half

(4) Increased degree of freedom with the product design

  1. Customer troubles:Product design with restrictions
  2. ECAS feature:Low profile. Customer benefit:Product design with increased degree of freedom

(5) Noise and vibration reduction

  1. Customer troubles:Unpleasant noise
  2. ECAS feature:Low acoustic noise. Customer benefit:Reduce noise/Reduce vibration

Main applications & Main markets

By adding the ECAS series to its line of multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) products, Murata has further broadened the range of options available to customers.

Explanatory video: Example solutions to problems

When undertaking circuit design, do you experience challenging situations such as, “There is a problem, but I can’t identify the cause,” “We needed to redesign the circuit, but it took an excessive number of man-hours accomplish it,” “There is a lot of demand in-house and from customers for thinner products, but it is difficult to meet such expectations,” or “We can’t leave the job to inexperienced circuit designers”?
Using Murata’s ECAS series polymer aluminum electrolytic capacitors can help you solve a variety of issues such as these.
