Silicon Capacitors FAQ


Please explain the relationship between the BV (Breakdown Voltage, BDV) and the Rated Voltage.

The withstanding voltage of a silicon capacitor is defined by the BV, there is no setting for the rated voltage, and the recommended working voltage is defined by the product lifetime and operating temperature.
Murata’s recommendations specify a recommended working voltage which will enable a product lifetime of ten years in an environment with a temperature of 100°C. The recommended working voltage is approximately one-third of the Breakdown Voltage. However, because the BV differs by product, please see the “Lifetime of 3D-capacitors in Murata technologies” in the Application Note for more details.
