Overview

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has recently developed a film-type high-frequency chip inductor*1 that has the world's largest inductance value*2 of 39 nH. Including this inductor, we have added four items to the lineup of our LQP02TN series, and commenced mass production in April 2013.

Background and Details

Along with the increase in the number of components used in smartphones and other compact mobile devices to cope with the increasing miniaturization and functional enhancement of these devices, the use of ultra-miniature 0402-size components is gaining momentum. Murata has mass-produced the conventional LQP02TN series and also the LQP02TQ series that has high Q value*3 characteristics, as high-frequency inductors of ultra-miniature size.

Recently, we have added four items between 22 nH and 39 nH to the lineup of our 0.2 – 20nH conventional LQP02TN series. By further developing our unique fine-forming technology that is the most significant feature of the LQP series, we have realized the world's largest inductance value of 39 nH in the 0402 size. As a result of this addition to the lineup of our LQP02TN series, the current lineup covers the range between 0.2 nH and 39 nH and consists of 59 items, a world record in which we take pride. Regarding the deviation of the inductance value as well, we can cope with narrow deviations of ±0.1 nH (0.2 – 4.2 nH) and ±3% (4.3 – 39 nH) .

Our extensive lineup and ability to provide inductance values with narrow deviations improve the number of degrees of freedom in circuit design employing the ultra-miniature 0402 size and also contribute to further miniaturization and functional enhancement of electronic devices such as smartphones. Going forward, we will strive to further widen the available range of inductance values, improve the Q characteristics, and promote the development of further miniaturization.

This product does not contain any substances restricted by the RoHS*4 directive.

Terminology

*1 Inductor: Together with a capacitor or a resistor, an inductor is a basic component of an electronic circuit. It is also called a coil. The main applications of an inductor can be classified into two types: signal circuit applications and power supply circuit applications. A high-frequency inductor is an inductor intended for signal circuit applications, and is used particularly in high-frequency circuits. Specifically it is used in circuits that transmit signals, mainly for frequency matching and also as a filter. The inductor of a power supply circuit is used for noise suppression and smoothing in a power supply circuit connected to semiconductors.
*2 Inductance value: This indicates the basic electrical performance of an inductor. It is the performance of the inductor in combination with the resistance value of a resistor element or the electrostatic capacitance of a capacitor element. In a high-frequency circuit, it is necessary to use an inductor of an inductance value that is suitable for the design values of the circuit. If the necessary inductance value cannot be obtained, a larger component must be selected. For this reason, increasing the available range of inductance values contributes to miniaturization of the electronic device.
*3 Q value: This is an abbreviation of "Quality factor." The greater the Q value, the smaller is the loss of the inductor. At high frequencies, it is necessary to transmit minute signals with high efficiency, so it can be said that the higher the Q value of an inductor, the lower is its loss and the higher is its signal transmission efficiency.
*4 RoHS Directive: A directive that restricts the use of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE in electrical and electronic devices.
