V2X Total Solution
An Optimum Solution for the Realization of Safe Driving Assistance Systems

As safety in driving has taken center stage in our society, various technologies and products aimed at the sophistication of advanced driving assistance systems, or ADAS have been in development. One of the key technologies that help realize ADAS is V2X communication, whose introduction has been studied in many different countries in collaboration with governmental authorities and automobile manufacturers. The V2X Total Solution, offered by communication technology expert Murata, provides an optimum solution for the realization of V2X communication.

V2X communication has been the focus of attention. It supports safety in driving by communicating information such as the position or speed of vehicles wirelessly with other vehicles or infrastructural facilities. Possible application under study includes uses for the detection of incoming cars into an intersection, prevention of collision with a preceding car, and detection of cars in blind spots. Part of these functions have already been introduced in Japan. The systems under study in North America and Europe are those complying with IEEE802.11p based on wireless LAN. For that, Murata has been engaged in the development of the V2X wireless modules and relevant software programs complying with the same 11p standards.

The V2X wireless modules are a central component that helps the realization of V2X. Murata’s RF engineering technologies accumulated over the years provide the foundations for quality performance modules. To detect the approach of other vehicles early enough, the communication module must have sufficiently high power to have a sufficiently long wireless communication range. This requirement poses a considerable engineering challenge, which is far more demanding than the common wireless LAN standards established by IEEE802.11n/ac. By optimized selection of appropriate components and fine-tuning of performance, Murata’s developed modules accomplish performance superior to those exhibited by the reference design of LSI makers. Installing the modules inside shark fin antennas has also been under study, for which the modules are being designed to maintain higher reliability in a high temperature environment.

To contribute with software as well as with hardware, Murata has been developing communication middleware (WAVE Short Message Protocol, or WSMP) , which will be compact software that will be able to process a few hundred to a few thousand messages per second stably using limited CPU resources. We can integrate our support of device drivers that have many proven records into this middleware to provide total solutions, which include providing highly reliable hardware and software, antenna technical support, and various kinds of authentication support.

The practical usage presently under study is providing information for drivers of vehicles to enhance their safety. The future application encompasses vehicular control and autonomous driving. Murata’s product lineup includes many types of sensors and wireless modules for ADAS. We believe that the combination of these components and the high-performance, high-reliability V2X Total Solution provided by Murata will be able to contribute greatly toward the sophistication of ADAS.

Glossary

ADAS (Advanced Driving Assistance Systems) :

Advanced systems that support drivers in their driving.

IEEE 802.11:

Wireless LAN standards established by the IEEE. The 11p (IEEE 802.11p) is the standard for communication methods used in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications.

WSMP (WAVE Short Message Protocol) :

One of the protocols used for V2X communication.
