The issue in the replacement of film capacitors with chip multilayer ceramic capacitors was preventing short circuit mode failures caused by cracks from board deflection. Since the lead wire type structure absorbs the stress caused by board deflection, it can be used without concern of cracks. In fact, this can prevent most short circuit mode failures of ceramic capacitors.

* There are cases where a film capacitor is recognized as a "film capacitor having self-restoration ability that will not cause short circuit mode failures." However, when an over voltage is continuously applied to a film capacitor for a long period, dielectric breakdown will not be restored and eventually fails by short circuit mode.

We believe that some people think that "even if cracks caused by board deflection could be prevented, ceramic capacitors will fail by short circuit mode if a dielectric breakdown occurs by an abnormal voltage or other factor. Considering that a short circuit of a capacitor leads to the emission of smoke or ignition, I am still concerned about using ceramic capacitors in power lines."

In order to solve this problem, it is effective to connect two capacitors in series.
There will be rare cases where a dielectric breakdown occurs in a capacitor by abnormal voltage or other factors. However, the risk of short circuit mode failures can be reduced by connecting two capacitors in series in a DC circuit. If the insulation of one of the capacitors deteriorates, most of the voltage will be shared by the other capacitor with a higher insulation resistance; therefore, the advancement of the deterioration can be suppressed and a short circuit can be prevented.

Utilizing this method, ceramic capacitors are used in locations where there is severe emphasis on safety, such as between the battery terminals of a car traveling system.
