Customer Issues

The working-age population is decreasing amid the declining birth rate and rapidly aging population. Against this backdrop, there is an increasing need for unmanned convenience stores to reduce personnel expenses and to resolve labor shortages. It is possible to accurately capture the movements of customers from when they enter a store to when they leave and to track them from all viewpoints in unmanned stores by installing cameras and sensors in place of people. For example, such cameras and sensors can recognize when products have been taken from shelves by customers, and unmanned payment starts when the customer proceeds to the cash register.
At the same time, to realize such unmanned stores, it is necessary to install AI security cameras and large-capacity data communication devices. In other words, there was an issue of securing the electric power infrastructure to transmit electricity to those devices. Moreover, by incorporating AI into security cameras, there were other issues such as an increase in power consumption and the need for gigabit communication that allows for the exchange of large amounts of data.

MYBSP0122BABFT

The functions necessary for Power over Ethernet (PoE), such as an interface for PoE powered devices (PDs) and withstand voltage characteristics, are built into Murata Manufacturing's DC-DC converter module for PoE from the beginning. It is designed to support the IEEE802.3at standard. Therefore, it is possible to greatly reduce the necessary development workload for the PoE design. Furthermore, the sheet transformer used in the module has a higher electric power conversion efficiency and lower electric power loss than power supplies that use general winding transformers. This reduces the heat generation and allows the power supply area to be reduced in size to about one quarter of the original.

Effects of Introduction

As higher electric power conversion efficiency can be realized by adopting Murata Manufacturing's MYBSP0122BABFT power supply module for PoE, we were able to reduce the power supply area by about 72% while suppressing heat generation due to electric power loss.

This product has a built-in interface that supports IEEE802.3at and an external output capacitor needed in general power supply module specifications. This makes it easy to introduce PoE functions just by installing one MYBSP0122BABFT.

In addition, these power supply designs suitable for IEEE802.3at make it possible to support gigabit communications with a single Ethernet cable and to use Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) such as PoE-compatible switches and PoE compatible injectors that can supply up to 30 W of electricity.
As a result, in addition to new AC outlet installation, it is possible to install PoE environments in places where space is limited such as on the ceiling of stores in a short time and with space saving.
Furthermore, the power supply design suitable for PoE makes it possible to allocate resources to designs other than for power supplies, thereby reducing the time until product release.
