At Murata, the executive in charge of environmental affairs is responsible for environmental activities throughout the Group, and the CSR, Environmental & Safety Management Department supports and promotes environmental activities across business sites. The Murata Environmental Committee, a consultative body to the President, discusses and examines the implementation status of environmental activities at each business site, as well as companywide environmental issues.
In order to further boost our reductions of CO2 emissions, we have established a Global Warming Prevention Committee, and we are increasing the pace of our efforts to reduce emissions at the design, development, and manufacturing stages.
Murata had acquired ISO 14001 certification for 53 sites in and outside Japan by April 30, 2019. We worked on integrating systems, and in March 2007, we had completed switching individual certification of Group business sites in Japan to ISO 14001 multi-site certification. We are planning to switch the certification of two new production sites that joined the Murata Group recently to the multi-site certification from fiscal 2019. In addition, in March 2010, we completed the integration of the environmental management systems employed in all of our domestic and overseas production sites and domestic business sites. Since then, we have implemented an integrated environmental management system from design and development to production and sales, and also applied improvements that proved successful in one plant or office to other plants or offices, so as to improve the environmental performance of the entire Murata Group.
In 2016, seeking to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our activities, we integrated our environmental management and occupational health and safety management systems.
Murata conducts environmental education for all employees to improve their environmental awareness.
The Group also enhanced the internal auditor training program in fiscal 2012, changing to a format that more closely approximates actual audits, for example by introducing simulated audits. Employees who handle wastewater and gas emission equipment or other equipment that affects the environment receive individual training on appropriate inspections and efficient operation to minimize impact on the environment.
Expenses for environmental activities in fiscal 2018 totaled approximately 6 billion yen.The figure for capital investment was approximately 4 billion yen.
As production increased, there was a commensurate increase in day-to-day management costs related to resource recycling measures. In addition, as a capital investment, we proactively introduced equipment to assist in the prevention of pollution.
