eBook: In-Cabin Radar for Child Protection
Child deaths in hot cars are on the rise.
Recent European NCAP standards, and pending US legislation, are requiring vehicle manufacturers to include child protection features which will detect a child inside a locked vehicle.
To help automakers comply with the mandate, Murata’s eBook assesses a robust, and inexpensive solution to detect whether a child is locked inside an unattended vehicle.
Using in-cabin radar technology we can detect the presence of a child inside a vehicle and determine the location of the child which supports seatbelt and airbag deployment. The solution can also discriminate between a sleeping baby and an inanimate object.
A radar solution will protect passenger privacy as well as minimize false positives generated by pedestrians and passing vehicles. A comparable solution using cameras would require 3 or more units for similar detection capabilities.
