5/26/2026

Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has announced the SCH1633-D05, a high-performance six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) inertial measurement unit (IMU) that expands the SCH1600 sensor family. The device combines a XYZ-axis gyroscope and XYZ-axis accelerometer and is intended for use in Automated Driving (AD), Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), inertial navigation, vehicle stability control, dynamic and headlight leveling, and humanoid robotics. Mass production will begin in June 2026, and samples are currently available.

Automotive electronics are shifting from module-based designs toward zonal architecture, where IMUs are mounted directly onto Electronic Control Units (ECUs) to reduce wiring and simplify system architecture through ECU integration. This transition creates a critical challenge: post-assembly calibration of ECU-mounted sensors is extremely difficult, meaning the IMU must meet stringent performance requirements at the component level. Conventional solutions have been unable to deliver this without either additional calibration steps that increase cost and complexity, or compromises in performance. Ceramic-packaged sensors can offer excellent temperature stability, but the package material is costly, and the rigidness may present challenges withstanding PCB strain in large-scale ECU integration, while plastic-packaged alternatives have traditionally required extensive customer-side calibration to achieve comparable thermal performance.

The SCH1633-D05 resolves this by combining Murata's industry-proven 3D MEMS process with the latest ASIC design to deliver ceramic-package-level temperature performance within a uniquely designed plastic SOIC package. The package features integrated EMC shielding and a low package profile, making it well suited for space-constrained ECU environments. Extended factory calibration characterizes and compensates for sensor behavior across the full operating temperature range before the device leaves the factory, eliminating the need for any customer-side temperature calibration. Total gyroscope offset performance is below 0.15 °/s across all axes.

The SCH1633-D05 offers best-in-class bias instability and noise performance. The gyroscope provides a measurement range of ±300 °/s, and the accelerometer a measurement range of ±80 m/s2with an auxiliary channel allowing up to ±260 m/s2dynamic range. 20-bit data resolution ensures smooth output. The device also incorporates over 200 internal monitoring signals to support functional safety requirements, enabling robust fault detection for systems developed to meet ISO 26262 and related standards. Overall, the SCH1633-D05 is designed to make sure that every autonomously driven corner is done with safety confidence and minimal position error propagation, in every driving situation.

By enabling a single high-performance IMU to serve multiple vehicle functions, the SCH1633-D05 helps reduce PCB area, sensor count, and cabling, contributing to more efficient and sustainable vehicle architectures. The lead-free, halogen-free SOIC package is compliant with ELV, RoHS, and China RoHS.
