Tolerance/Frequency

Improvement of frequency tolerance

USB devices for PC peripherales and CAN-BUS devices for automobiles need resonators that can provide tighter oscillating frequency tolerance than conventional models.
Therefore, the resonators that generate timing control signals for such equipment must provide highly-accurate oscillating frequency of ±0.25 to 0.40% (total frequency tolerance comprising initial tolerance, frequency drift by temperature and aging).
Murata has endeavoured to improve ceramic micro-processing technology and to develop original piezoelectric materials to offer resonators that can meet the oscillation accuracy required for USB devices. You can expect Murata products to provide even tighter tolerance in the future.

Expanding to higher frequencies

With the trend in recent years toward multifunctional sets, higher processing speeds are required. To increase processing speed of equipment incorporating a microcomputer, the microcomputer's clock frequency must be increased. To meet this requirement, resonators that provide higher oscillation frequencies are needed.
With the "CERALOCK®" covering the MHz-band, we must reduce the thickness of the piezoelectric element in order to increase the oscillation frequency according to the following formula.

Oscillation frequency (Resonant frequency) = Piezoelectric constant*/Element thickness
(*The piezoelectric constant is fixed for each material)

However, if the element thickness is reduced, the product strength may be also reduced. To cope with this problem, Murata has developed resonators that can provide higher oscillation frequencies through product size optimization, development of new piezoelectric materials, and processing technology improvements. At present, Murata offers an extensive product lineup covering up to 70MHz, and is proceeding with development of resonators covering higher frequencies in the existing product series and vibration modes.
