Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has introduced the KCA series Type MF safety standard certified metal terminal type multilayer ceramic capacitors for automotive applications. This product has a distance between terminals of 4 mm or more, and is intended mainly for use in onboard chargers (OBC*1), inverters, DC-DC converters, and other equipment in electric vehicles. Mass production of this product is scheduled to begin in December 2018.
KCA series Type MF safety standard certified metal terminal type multilayer ceramic capacitors for automotive applications are certified under the IEC60384-14 Class X1/Y2 international safety standard for capacitors, and can be used as Class Y2 Y capacitors*2
in onboard chargers and other equipment. The elastic action of the metal terminals reduces the stress on the ceramic element, and the design reduces the risk of cracking. This product can be used in onboard chargers, not only in AC lines that require safety standard certified capacitors, but also as Y capacitors in DC lines.
The conventional KCA series Type MF capacitors satisfied the distance between terminals of 3.2 mm specified thus far by IEC60384-14. However, when used in DC lines for electric vehicle applications, there were cases where a distance between terminals of 3.2 mm was judged to be insufficient depending on the applied voltage, operating environment, board material, and other factors. This product uses a new metal terminal design that realizes a distance between terminals of 4 mm or more. This enables to support design needs for even higher voltages compared to the conventional lineup.
