AMR stands for “anisotropic magneto resistance.” “Anisotropic” means having a physical property that varies when measured in specific directions. AMR sensors can detect a magnetic field when it is in a certain direction to them, while they cannot detect one when it is in different directions. Not the vicinity of the magnet, but the right direction of magnetic lines and sufficient magnetic field strength are required for an AMR sensor to be activated. By taking advantage of this feature, AMR sensors can be used in a broad range of arrangements and applications. When controlled by NEC, they were distributed under the “MR sensor” name. The new “AMR sensor” name replaced it with the business transfer to Murata Manufacturing.
